Where DIY goes wrong is the countertop cutout and the drain torque spec. Silgranit is hard but brittle; a router bit at the wrong speed chips the flange. The basket strainer needs 25 Nm of torque, no more, on a specific sequence, or the gasket extrudes and the joint fails slowly. We’ve removed sinks in Carlsbad where the homeowner used plumber’s putty instead of the supplied silicone gasket, and the putty degraded into the drain line.
